The Fitness and Metabolism Unit (FMU) is designed to facilitate research projects involving human subjects, featuring a variety of research, laboratory spaces, and equipment for controlled studies that involve diet, exercise, and behavioral change. Equipment may also be used by researchers to collect data on metabolic risk factors, body composition, and/or physical fitness.
The FMU has two fully equipped metabolic kitchens (both NWRC-Campus and NWRC-Research Park locations), with walk-in pantries, cold rooms, and freezers. We have several dining rooms to accommodate a range of study group sizes.
We also have the facilities and ability to:
- obtain blood samples from participants for chemistry profiles
- provide dietary analysis via Nutritionist Pro
- assess bone density (spine, hip, and whole body) via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)
- assess body composition via DXA, bioelectrical impedance (BIA), and anthropometry
- perform analyses using biochemical and breath gas analyzers
- conduct free-living activity assessments using a variety of instruments, including ergometers, treadmill, metabolic cart, and physical activity armband monitors
