The Institute of Medicine (IOM), the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, today released a consensus report, "School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children." The report makes several recommendations to improve standards for the national school nutrition program. The IOM panel included NWRC affiliate Helen Jensen, ISU professor of economics and head of the Food and Nutrition Policy Division in the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD).
Recommendations include an increase in the amounts of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and reduction in the amounts of saturated fat and sodium in meals.
